Gray baby syndrome is a rare side effect that occurs due to accumulation of the chloramphenicol in the newborn infant. The cause of gray baby syndrome is that the newborn baby lacks the some liver enzymes which are necessary to metabolize and removes this drug from the body. The accumulation of the chloramphenicol in the body leads to toxicity which causes development of symptoms such as vomiting, gray color of the skin, blue discolouration of lips and skin.
