Istamet Information

Istamet is a commercial drug that is prescribed in the form of Tablet. Primarily, it is used for the treatment of Diabetes. Secondary and off-label uses of Istamet have also been mentioned below.

The optimal dosage of Istamet is largely dependent on the individual's body weight, medical history, gender and age. Dosage also depends on the route of administration and your chief complaint for which the drug is prescribed. For detailed information on this, read through the dosage section.

Common side effects of Istamet include Nausea or vomiting, Headache, Diarrhoea. Apart from the aforementioned side effects, Istamet can also lead to other problems, which have been listed below. No, you should not take alcohol with Istamet, because it can cause serious side effects which includes hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). The risk of hypoglycemia is higher when you're drinking and taking Istamet than if you're just taking Istamet. Some of the signs of hypoglycemia include dizziness, confusion, and drowsiness.

Yes, you can take Istamet with a beta-blocker. People with diabetes tend to develop heart disease or stroke at an earlier age than the general population. One reason for this is that high glucose levels increase your risk of high blood pressure (hypertension). No harmful interactions are seen between them. However, a recent study suggests that beta-blockers can decrease the plasma level of Istamet and long-term use can increase lactic acid and uric acid in the blood.
