Yes, Gerfex can treat strep throat or streptococcal pharyngitis which is an infection of the throat that results in a sore throat caused by bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes. Since Gerfex is a prescription drug and an antibiotic, you are advised not to take Gerfex by yourself.
Yes, Gerfex can be taken with prednisone. No harmful drug interaction has been reported between them. It is safe to take Gerfex along with prednisone.
Gerfex contains cefalexin which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It works by preventing the cell wall synthesis in bacteria by binding to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins). The cell wall protects the bacteria from the environment, in the absence of this cell wall, the bacteria becomes vulnerable and dies. Gerfex is effective against a wide range of both gram negative and gram positive bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
No, Gerfex does not cover Enterococcus faecalis. They are generally found to be resistant to Gerfex. Hence, it is not recommended to use this drug for the treatment of the infection caused by Enterococcus faecalis.
