No, Alkapen is not an antacid. It contains sodium hydrogen citrate which belongs to the class of drugs known as alkalinizing agents. It is used for the treatment of gout (a type of arthritis that occurs due to the formation and deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints). It is also used for the prevention of nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) and treatment of acidosis (decrease in blood pH levels).
Alkapen is a prescription drug, hence do not take it without consulting doctor to avoid unpleasant side effects. It can be harmful for patients to take this medicine without a doctor's advice.
Take Alkapen as advised by your doctor. Do not discontinue the drug suddenly or take it longer than prescribed by your doctor.
Alkapen contains disodium Hydrogen Citrate (an alkalinizing agent) which is metabolized into bicarbonate. Bicarbonate causes an increase in pH of urine (alkalinizes urine) by promoting the excretion of free bicarbonate ions, this leads to increase in solubility of cysteine which is present in the urine and this results in ionization of uric acid into more soluble urate ion. In this way Alkapen works and helps the body to get rid of excessive uric acid.
Yes, Alkapen can be taken with paracetamol. No harmful drug interaction has been reported between them. However, if you feel any discomfort after taking this drug do not hesitate to inform your doctor.
