It belongs to the class of drugs known as alkalinizing agents but it may decrease counts of bacteria as well as improve symptoms in case of infection. It is mainly used for the treatment of gout (a type of arthritis that occurs due to the formation and deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints). It is also used for the prevention of nephrolithiasis (kidney stones).
