It is also used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).

Rifidor works by inhibiting the bacterial protein synthesis which is essential for bacterial growth. The absence of these proteins results in stunned bacterial growth due to which bacteria is not able to survive. For hepatic encephalopathy Rifidor works by inhibiting the growth of enteric ammonia-producing bacteria which are present in our gut, this results in the indirect reduction of serum ammonia level. In irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, how Rifidor works are still unknown but it is presumed that it works by changing the bacterial flora in small intestine and reduction in gas.
