Phexin contains cefalexin which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It works by preventing the cell wall synthesis in bacteria by binding to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins). The cell wall protects the bacteria from the environment, in the absence of this cell wall, the bacteria becomes vulnerable and dies. Phexin is effective against a wide range of both gram negative and gram positive bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
Take Phexin as long as your doctor has prescribed it. Do not take this medicine longer than prescribed to avoid bacterial resistance and unpleasant side effects.
No, Phexin does not cover the strains related to Pseudomonas species. They are generally found to be resistant to Phexin. Hence, it is not recommended to use this drug for the treatment of the infection caused by Pseudomonas species.
