What is Furoped?

Dr. Ayush Pandey MBBS, PG Diploma , General Physician

Furoped is a brand name of furosemide and it comes in different forms such as tablet and injections. It is a prescription drug that belongs to the class of drugs called loop diuretics (high-ceiling sulfonamide diuretics) or famously known as water pills. It is used for the treatment of edema (swelling due to an accumulation of excessive fluid) associated with the diseases such as congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and nephrotic syndrome. It is also used for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).

Question almost 6 years ago

How does Furoped work?

Dr Anjum Mujawar MBBS, MBBS , Emergency Medicine

Furoped works by increasing the rate of urine formation by inhibiting the sodium and potassium reabsorption from the kidney, this causes more frequent urination than normal. An increased flow of urination leads to a decrease in blood volume and removal of this extra fluid from your body results in a decrease in edema. The decreased blood volume causes relaxation of the walls of blood vessels and this results in a decrease in blood pressure which gives relief from swelling and high blood pressure to the patient.

Question almost 6 years ago

Is Furoped safe to use?

However, certain side effects have been associated with this drug such as hypokalemia (decreased levels of potassium), hyperuricemia (increased levels of uric acid), diarrhoea, headache, and dizziness.
