The use of Xifapill for the treatment of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is not approved and scientific evidence supporting its use for SIBO is not sufficient.
No, Xifapill does not cause weight gain. It has not been reported by the patients who are taking this drug but Xifapill has been reported to cause weight loss in a few patients with travelers’ diarrhea. Xifapill works by inhibiting the bacterial protein synthesis which is essential for bacterial growth. The absence of these proteins results in stunned bacterial growth due to which bacteria is not able to survive. For hepatic encephalopathy Xifapill works by inhibiting the growth of enteric ammonia-producing bacteria which are present in our gut, this results in the indirect reduction of serum ammonia level. In irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, how Xifapill works are still unknown but it is presumed that it works by changing the bacterial flora in small intestine and reduction in gas.
