No research has been done on this till date. Therefore, it is not known what the effect of taking Rifazim 550 Tablet with alcohol will be.
Rifazim works by inhibiting the bacterial protein synthesis which is essential for bacterial growth. The absence of these proteins results in stunned bacterial growth due to which bacteria is not able to survive. For hepatic encephalopathy Rifazim works by inhibiting the growth of enteric ammonia-producing bacteria which are present in our gut, this results in the indirect reduction of serum ammonia level. In irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, how Rifazim works are still unknown but it is presumed that it works by changing the bacterial flora in small intestine and reduction in gas.
No, Rifazim is not a penicillin. It contains rifaximin which is a broad spectrum antibiotic and an analog of rifampicin. It is a prescription drug that is used in the treatment of travelers’ diarrhea (TD), hepatic encephalopathy, and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).
Rifazim in combination with other antibiotics might be used to eradicate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) but it is generally not used and not approved for the treatment of the infection caused by H. pylori.
