Folistat is a brand name of folic acid which is a water-soluble form of vitamin B9. The natural form is known as folate while folic acid is the synthetic form. It is a prescription drug which is given for the treatment of folic acid deficiency. It is also given in pregnancy to prevent birth defects (neural tube defects) in the fetus.
Long-term use of Folistat in doses 800 to 1200 micrograms can increase the risk of heart diseases, lung, and prostate cancer.
Folic acid can be safely taken through the oral route or through an injection. The drug is safe when taken in doses less than 1000 micrograms per day.
