Faxicad is a brand name of rifaximin and it comes in the form of tablet and syrup. It is a prescription drug and a broad-spectrum antibiotic which is used in the prevention of travelers’ diarrhea (TD) caused by bacteria Escherichia coli and to reduce the risk of hepatic encephalopathy (a brain disorder that causes decline in functioning of the brain due to accumulation of ammonia in which results from the liver damage) along with lactulose. It is also used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D).
Faxicad works by inhibiting the bacterial protein synthesis which is essential for bacterial growth. The absence of these proteins results in stunned bacterial growth due to which bacteria is not able to survive. For hepatic encephalopathy Faxicad works by inhibiting the growth of enteric ammonia-producing bacteria which are present in our gut, this results in the indirect reduction of serum ammonia level. In irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, how Faxicad works are still unknown but it is presumed that it works by changing the bacterial flora in small intestine and reduction in gas.
