Soxplat Information

Soxplat Injection contains Oxaliplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy drug used to treat colon and rectal cancers. It works by inhibiting the growth of cancer cells.

Uses:

  • Treatment of colon and rectal cancer.

Oxaliplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy drug that exerts its anticancer effects by interfering with the DNA of cancer cells. The mechanism of action involves the following steps:

  1. DNA Intercalation and Crosslinking: Oxaliplatin is taken up by the cancer cell and undergoes conversion into its active form. It binds to the DNA in the cell, creating both intra- and inter-strand crosslinks in the DNA structure.

  2. Inhibition of DNA Replication and Transcription: These crosslinks prevent the DNA from unwinding and replicating properly, which interferes with the cell's ability to replicate its genetic material and divide. This leads to the inhibition of DNA replication and transcription.

  3. Induction of Apoptosis: The DNA damage caused by oxaliplatin triggers cellular mechanisms that induce programmed cell death (apoptosis). This process ultimately kills the cancer cell and helps to control tumor growth.

  4. Platinum-DNA Adduct Formation: Oxaliplatin forms platinum-DNA adducts, which are highly cytotoxic. These adducts further prevent proper cell division and cause cell cycle arrest at various checkpoints.

Oxaliplatin is particularly effective in treating colorectal cancer due to its ability to damage cancerous cells, leading to their death and preventing tumor progression.

Dosage and Administration:

Soxplat Injection is administered intravenously by a qualified healthcare professional. The dosage and frequency are determined by the treating physician based on the patient's condition. It is crucial to follow the doctor's instructions precisely to avoid serious side effects.

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • Decreased white blood cell count
  • Low blood platelets
  • Increased liver enzymes
  • Peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness in hands and feet)
  • Stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth)

Most side effects do not require medical attention and may subside as the body adjusts to the medication. However, consult your doctor if they persist or cause concern.

Warnings and Precautions:

  • Alcohol: It is not known whether it is safe to consume alcohol with Oxaliplatin Injection. Please consult your doctor.
  • Pregnancy: Oxaliplatin Injection is unsafe to use during pregnancy as there is definite evidence of risk to the developing baby. However, the doctor may prescribe it in some life-threatening situations if the benefits outweigh the risks. Please consult your doctor.
  • Breastfeeding: Oxaliplatin Injection is unsafe to use during breastfeeding. Data suggests that the drug may cause toxicity to the baby.
  • Driving: Oxaliplatin Injection may cause side effects that could affect your ability to drive. Treatment may result in an increased risk of dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and other neurological symptoms that affect walking, which may impair your ability to drive.
  • Kidney: Oxaliplatin Injection should be used with caution in patients with severe kidney disease. Dose adjustment may be needed. Please consult your doctor.
  • Liver: Oxaliplatin Injection should be used with caution in patients with liver disease. Dose adjustment may be needed. Please consult your doctor.

Storage:

Store in a refrigerator (2°C – 8°C). Do not freeze. Keep the vial in the outer carton to protect from light.
