Mesna is a cytoprotective agent used to reduce the risk of hemorrhagic cystitis caused by certain chemotherapy medications, such as cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide. It protects the bladder from the toxic effects of these medications by binding to harmful metabolites.
Prevention of hemorrhagic cystitis associated with cyclophosphamide and ifosfamide treatment
Protection of the urinary tract during chemotherapy
Mesna binds to the urotoxic metabolites of oxazaphosphorine chemotherapy agents (acrolein and other compounds) in the bladder, forming non-toxic compounds that are excreted in the urine, thereby preventing bladder damage.
Dosage is based on the cyclophosphamide or ifosfamide dose. Typically, Mesna is given at 20% of the chemotherapy dose, intravenously at the time of chemotherapy administration and repeated at intervals as recommended.
Onset of Action: Within minutes after intravenous administration.
Duration of Action: Approximately 4 to 8 hours.
