Doctors for Master of the Mind: Exploring the Hypothalamus and Its Functions

Hypothalamus is a small and important part of the brain. It controls many important functions of the body. This is the most important link between the nervous system and endocrine system. The hypothalamus keeps the body balanced in a stable state called homeostasis. Its main function is to release or stop hormones.

The hypothalamus is an important part of the brain approximately the size of an almond. It is installed in the base of the brain below the thalamus and above the pituitary gland. It lies at the base of the brain, directly above the brainstem, which controls the hormonal system.

Hypothalamus is a part of the brain that controls the hormonal system. It also releases hormones in the pituitary gland, an important part of the brain. From here it sends hormones to different parts of the body, such as adrenal, thyroid, ovaries and testicles. Let us know in detail about the functions of hypothalamus -

Hypothalamus works to control the body. For this, it directly affects the autonomic nervous system or controls hormones. Autonomic nervous systems work independently. They control many important functions, like heart rate and breathing etc.

The hypothalamus also controls many other functions of the body. It is important for sex drive, behavior and emotions. Apart from this, it controls weight, breast milk production, salt and water balance in the body, childbirth and sleep-wake cycle. Apart from this, it also controls emotional response.

Another function of the hypothalamus is to produce the hormone dopamine. Dopamine is known as the ‘feel good’ hormone. This hormone makes you feel happy. When you feel happy, it gives you motivation to do some work. Dopamine gives signals from the pituitary gland to control or stop the prolactin hormone.

You can keep the hypothalamus healthy by adopting some methods.

Eat A Balanced Diet
Although eating a balanced diet is important for every organ in the body, it is especially important in the case of the hypothalamus. A 2017 study in rats found that eating a high-fat diet led to inflammation in the hypothalamus. On the other hand, a separate 2017 study in rats concluded that high intakes of both fat and sugar lead to inflammation in the hypothalamus.

Get Enough Sleep
A 2014 study in rats found that sleep loss was associated with hypothalamic dysfunction. Additionally, researchers suggested that lack of sleep may increase the risk of neurological disease. If you have trouble sleeping, try natural remedies to help you sleep and keep your hypothalamus functioning properly.

Exercise Regularly
Like eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep, regular exercise promotes your overall health. If you're having diet problems, exercise is especially important. A 2012 study involving rats found that even mild amounts of regular exercise reduced hypothalamic inflammation associated with a high-fat diet.

To maintain homeostasis, the hypothalamus works with the pituitary gland to control hormone production. These include the thyroid and parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries (in women) and testicles (in men). The endocrine system is responsible for blood pressure, heart rate, production of digestive enzymes, and maintaining balanced body fluids.

Interaction With Pituitary Gland
In conjunction with the pituitary gland, the hypothalamus secretes the following hormones:

  • Antidiuretic hormone (ADH): This hormone helps control the amount of water in the body. This helps in controlling blood pressure.
  • Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH): This is a hormone that helps regulate the immune response, particularly by reducing stress.
  • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone: This enables the sexual organs of both men and women to function properly.
  • Oxytocin: This hormone is involved in many processes. Primarily, it facilitates childbirth and the release of mother's breast milk.
  • Prolactin-regulating hormones: These are hormones such as dopamine and estrogen that work to cause the pituitary gland to start or stop the production of breast milk in breastfeeding mothers.
  • Thyrotropin-releasing hormone: This hormone is the main regulator of the thyroid. It regulates metabolism, energy levels and developmental growth.
