Vasotense is a brand name of flunarizine and it is available in the form of a tablet. It belongs to the class of drug known as selective calcium antagonist. It is mainly used for the preventive (prophylactic) and treatment of migraine attacks in patients who do not respond to other drugs that are primarily used to treat a migraine. It is also used in the symptomatic treatment of vestibular vertigo which is caused by a functional disorder of the vestibular system.
No, Vasotense should not be discontinued without doctors advice even when you start feeling well because discontinuing of this drug on your own might worsen your current medical condition. Hence you are advised to always consult a doctor before discontinuing this medicine.
Vasotense contains flunarizine which works through preventing the narrowing of blood vessels due to calcium overload caused by the excessive influx of calcium. The narrowing of blood vessels is considered as a possible cause for migraine and its prevention helps in reducing the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. Vasotense also blocks the release of a chemical messenger (histamine) due to its antihistaminic properties which are presumed to contribute in providing relief to the patient from symptoms of vestibular vertigo.
Usually Vasotense is given for short-term treatment up to 2-6 months which may vary from case to case basis. You are advised to take Vasotense as long as it is recommended by your doctor. Using this medicine beyond that period might not be good for you because it can lead to unintended side effects.
Vasotense can be taken 1-2 times in a day or as advised by your doctor. It has to be taken with food to avoid stomach upset. Precautions must be taken in patients with heart diseases, glaucoma, and epilepsy. You should strictly take this drug only on doctor advice.
