Unlike GnRH agonists, Degarelix reduces testosterone levels quickly without causing an initial testosterone surge. This makes it a preferred option for patients where rapid testosterone suppression is critical.

Uses

Advanced Prostate Cancer:

• Used to suppress testosterone levels, which slows the growth of prostate cancer.

Degarelix works by directly binding to and blocking GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland. This suppresses the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), leading to a rapid decrease in testosterone production by the testes.

Dosages

Initial Dose:

• 240 mg administered as two subcutaneous injections of 120 mg each.

Maintenance Dose:

• 80 mg administered as a single subcutaneous injection every 28 days.
