Harscal contains calcitriol which is a vitamin D analog. Normally, calcitriol is produced by the kidneys which help in maintaining the normal levels of calcium and phosphate in the body through its absorption in the intestine and its retention but due to kidney failure, the body is unable to maintain that balance which causes low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) and low phosphate levels (hypophosphatemia). Hence in this way Harscal restores this balance. Harscal also inhibits the release of the parathyroid hormone in case of secondary hyperparathyroidism which restores the normal levels of parathyroid hormone in the body. In this way Harscal works in the management of hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and secondary hyperparathyroidism.
