Emtreo Information

Emtreo Injection is a prescription medication containing the active ingredient Treosulfan, classified as an alkylating agent. It is primarily utilized in the treatment of various cancers and as part of conditioning regimens prior to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT). Emtreo Injection (Treosulfan) is a valuable chemotherapeutic agent used in the treatment of advanced ovarian cancer and as part of conditioning regimens for stem cell transplantation. Its efficacy stems from its ability to inhibit DNA replication in cancer cells, thereby reducing tumor growth. As with all chemotherapy treatments, it is crucial for patients to discuss the potential benefits and risks with their healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment plan tailored to their individual needs.

Medical Uses:

1. Ovarian Cancer: Emtreo Injection is indicated for the treatment of advanced ovarian cancer, particularly after the failure of initial standard therapies.

2. Conditioning Regimen for Stem Cell Transplantation: In combination with fludarabine, Emtreo Injection is used as a conditioning treatment to prepare patients for alloHSCT. This regimen is employed in adults with malignant and non-malignant diseases and in pediatric patients older than one month with malignant diseases.

Mechanism of Action:

Treosulfan functions as an alkylating agent by forming cross-links between DNA strands, thereby inhibiting DNA replication and leading to cell death. This mechanism effectively prevents the proliferation of cancer cells.

Administration:

Emtreo Injection is administered intravenously by a qualified healthcare professional. The dosage and frequency are determined based on the patient's medical condition, body surface area, and response to treatment. Self-administration is not recommended.

Common Side Effects:

Patients receiving Emtreo Injection may experience:

  • Hematological Effects: Myelosuppression leading to anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia.

  • Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

  • General Symptoms: Fatigue, fever, and weakness.

  • Dermatological Effects: Mild hair loss and skin discoloration.

Most side effects are manageable, but patients should promptly report any persistent or severe symptoms to their healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects:

Although less common, serious side effects may include:

  • Infections: Due to bone marrow suppression, there is an increased risk of bacterial, viral, or fungal infections.

  • Organ Toxicity: Potential liver or lung toxicity, including liver vein blockage and lung inflammation.

Immediate medical attention is necessary if any severe adverse reactions occur.

Precautions:

Before initiating treatment with Emtreo Injection, inform your healthcare provider if you have:

  • Allergies: Known hypersensitivity to Treosulfan or any component of the formulation.

  • Infections: Active or uncontrolled infections.

  • Organ Dysfunction: Liver, kidney, or lung diseases.

  • Genetic Disorders: Conditions like Fanconi anemia or other DNA repair disorders.

Regular monitoring of blood counts and organ function is essential during treatment.

Use in Specific Populations:

  • Pregnancy: Emtreo Injection can harm the unborn baby and is not recommended during pregnancy. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment and for six months after the last dose.

  • Breastfeeding: It is unknown whether Treosulfan passes into breast milk; therefore, breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment and for six months after the final dose.

  • Pediatric Use: Safety and efficacy have not been established in children under one month of age.

Drug Interactions:

Inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements, as certain medications may interact with Treosulfan, affecting its efficacy or increasing the risk of adverse effects.

Storage:

Store Emtreo Injection at room temperature (25°C), with permissible excursions between 15°C to 30°C. Keep the medication away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children and pets. Do not refrigerate or freeze.
