Bavencio (Avelumab) is a monoclonal antibody that targets PD-L1 (programmed death-ligand 1), a protein involved in suppressing immune system activity. By inhibiting PD-L1, Bavencio restores immune system activity, enabling it to detect and attack cancer cells. It is used in the treatment of advanced cancers, particularly metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma and urothelial carcinoma.
Bavencio works by binding to the PD-L1 protein on cancer cells. This prevents PD-L1 from interacting with the PD-1 receptor on T-cells, a mechanism that suppresses immune response. By blocking this interaction, Bavencio enables T-cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells.
