Alfa Arcium contains calcitriol which is a vitamin D analog. Normally, calcitriol is produced by the kidneys which help in maintaining the normal levels of calcium and phosphate in the body through its absorption in the intestine and its retention but due to kidney failure, the body is unable to maintain that balance which causes low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) and low phosphate levels (hypophosphatemia). Hence in this way Alfa Arcium restores this balance. Alfa Arcium also inhibits the release of the parathyroid hormone in case of secondary hyperparathyroidism which restores the normal levels of parathyroid hormone in the body. In this way Alfa Arcium works in the management of hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, and secondary hyperparathyroidism.
Usually Alfa Arcium is given for 2 - 4 weeks which may vary from case to case basis depending on the age, gender, and diagnosis of the patient. You are advised take it as per your doctor's advice. Do not take this medicine longer than prescribed as an excess of Alfa Arcium can also cause hypervitaminosis D which is high levels of vitamin D in our body that can lead to unpleasant side effects such as high blood pressure, increased heart rate, and fatigue.
