Drinking too much alcohol over a long period of time can cause fat to build up in your liver, a condition known as alcohol-related liver disease. This disease can eventually cause scarring of the liver tissue, called cirrhosis. Depending on how deep the lesion is, liver function may also decrease. Fatty tissue can also accumulate in your liver even if you drink little or no alcohol. This is known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Severe forms of NAFLD can even lead to cirrhosis. NAFLD and alcohol-related liver disease fall under fatty liver disease, but their causes and treatments are different.
