Question over 5 years ago

Is Hepalair helpful in hepatic encephalopathy?

Dr. Ram Saini MD, MBBS , General Physician

Yes, Hepalair is helpful in hepatic encephalopathy which is a brain disorder that causes a decline in the functioning of the brain due to the accumulation of ammonia caused by liver damage. Hepalair works by promoting the synthesis of glutamine in our body which is an amino acid that binds with ammonia, this binding results in the formation of a complex which is non-toxic in nature and easily removed from the body by kidneys in urine. Thus Hepalair helps in inactivation or detoxification and removal of these harmful excessive levels of ammonia which restores its balance in our body.

It belongs to the class of drug known as hepatic protectors. It is a prescription drug that is used in the management of hyperammonemia (high levels of ammonia in blood) that results from liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis (liver damage caused by long-term alcohol consumption or untreated hepatitis), fatty liver (deposition of fat in the liver), and hepatitis (inflammation of liver due to viral infection). Hepalair is also used in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy (a brain disorder that causes a decline in the functioning of the brain due to the accumulation of ammonia in which results from the liver damage).
