Pentids is a narrow-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic which belongs to the class of drugs known as penicillins. It works by preventing the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall by binding to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins). In the absence of a cell wall, the bacteria becomes vulnerable and dies. It also kills the bacteria during the stage of their active multiplication. It is effective against penicillin-susceptible bacteria such as staphylococci (barring the penicillinase-producing strains), streptococci (groups A, B, C, G, H, L, and M), Streptococcus pneumoniae, Treponema pallidum, and Neisseria meningitidis.
Yes, Pentids covers some anaerobes such as Peptococcus species and its high doses are required to kill these bacterial species but most anaerobe strains are not covered by Pentids because it is a narrow-spectrum antibiotic.
Yes, Pentids covers Enterococcus faecalis bacteria but to increase the efficacy of Pentids against this bacteria aminoglycosides antibiotics are given along with this drug. However antibiotic sensitivity test is recommended to confirm the susceptibility of this bacteria to Pentids.
