The dosage of Covatil may vary from case to case as it depends on the type of infection and severity of an infection. You are recommended to take this drug as per your doctor's instructions. It should be taken with food because food promotes its absorption from the stomach. Precautions must be taken in patients with a history of penicillin allergy, colitis, and impaired kidney function.
No, Covatil does not cover MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infections. Staphylococci that are resistant to methicillin/oxacillin should be considered resistant to Covatil.
No, Covatil does not cover Enterococcus faecalis. They are generally found to be resistant to Covatil. However antibiotic sensitivity test is recommended to confirm its resistance.
Covatil contains cefuroxime which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by preventing the cell wall synthesis in bacteria by binding to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins). The cell wall protects the bacteria from the environment, in the absence of this cell wall, the bacteria becomes vulnerable and dies. Covatil is effective against a wide range of both gram negative and gram positive bacteria such as Moraxella catarrhalis, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pneumoniae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
Yes, Covatil might affect hormonal birth control because it can cause decreases in estrogen reabsorption and reduction in the efficacy of combined oral contraceptives (estrogen and progesterone).
