Cefgrey contains cefuroxime which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by preventing the cell wall synthesis in bacteria by binding to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins). The cell wall protects the bacteria from the environment, in the absence of this cell wall, the bacteria becomes vulnerable and dies. Cefgrey is effective against a wide range of both gram negative and gram positive bacteria such as Moraxella catarrhalis, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pneumoniae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
No, Cefgrey does not cover MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infections. Staphylococci that are resistant to methicillin/oxacillin should be considered resistant to Cefgrey.
Yes, Cefgrey covers some anaerobes such as Peptococcus niger but most strains of Clostridium difficile and Bacteroides fragilis are generally found to be resistant to Cefgrey.
