Axtum contains cefuroxime which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It works by preventing the cell wall synthesis in bacteria by binding to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins). The cell wall protects the bacteria from the environment, in the absence of this cell wall, the bacteria becomes vulnerable and dies. Axtum is effective against a wide range of both gram negative and gram positive bacteria such as Moraxella catarrhalis, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pneumoniae, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
Yes, Axtum covers some anaerobes such as Peptococcus niger but most strains of Clostridium difficile and Bacteroides fragilis are generally found to be resistant to Axtum.
Yes, Axtum can treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections which is an infection of the urinary system caused by bacteria Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae. It works by preventing the cell wall synthesis in bacteria by binding to specific proteins (penicillin-binding proteins). The cell wall protects the bacteria from the environment, in the absence of this cell wall, the bacteria becomes vulnerable and dies.
Yes, Axtum might affect hormonal birth control because it can cause decreases in estrogen reabsorption and reduction in the efficacy of combined oral contraceptives (estrogen and progesterone).
