Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces more thyroid hormone than the body needs. This is also known as "overactive thyroid". If not treated effectively, it can harm the heart, muscles, semen quality and other health. The thyroid gland is located in the neck. The hormones made by the thyroid gland affect energy levels and the function of most organs. Like thyroid hormone plays a role in heartbeat.
The opposite of hyperthyroidism is low hypothyroidism, or "underactive thyroid," which occurs when the gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone to meet the body's needs. Women are 2 to 10 times more likely than men to develop an overactive thyroid. Hyperthyroidism occurs in men and usually requires medications to keep it under control. Many main symptoms of hyperthyroidism are similar in men and women, but there are some symptoms which occur only in men.
