What is molar tooth pain?
Presence of pain in and around the jaws and teeth denotes tooth pain. It typically results from tooth decay. Molar teeth are located at the back of the mouth. There are four molar teeth, two in the lower jaw and two in the upper jaw. Some persons develop none or fewer molar teeth. In some people, the molar tooth develops at an angle, which pushes the surrounding tooth or the gum. This process is painful, and it becomes difficult to keep the area around the tooth clean.

- Stiff or painful jaw near the molar tooth
- Difficulty in swallowing, brushing and opening the mouth

- Crowding of teeth
- Pus developing in the gum
- Infection or inflammation of the gum surrounding the molar tooth
- Bad breath
- Uneasiness
- Accumulation of food and bacteria between the wisdom tooth and the neighbouring teeth
- Swelling in the lymph nodes
- Irritation or pain in the tongue, cheek, bottom or top of the mouth due to the tooth erupting in the wrong angle
- Gum disease
- Fever
What are the main causes?
The main causes of molar tooth pain are:
- Inflammation in the dental pulp (innermost layer of the tooth)
- Tooth abscess (build-up of bacteria and infected material in the centre of the tooth)
- Receding gums making the root of the molar tooth sensitive
- Poor hygiene
- Pus formation
How is it diagnosed and treated?
A dentist will diagnose pain in the molar tooth by conducting a check-up and referring to an X-ray to determine which one of the molars is the cause for pain.
Molar tooth pain is treated using the following methods:
- Over-the-counter pain relievers
- Antibiotics prescription
- Cleaning of the infected area
- Tooth extraction if the tooth is severely infected
- Rinses with warm salt water
- Root canal
