Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease. It affects the airways of lungs, increasing the sensitivity of respiratory mucous membrane to a variety of environmental triggers, which are otherwise not harmful to most people.
An asthmatic attack is usually characterised by swelling in airways (bronchial tubes) leading to narrowing of bronchial tubes and reduction in airflow to lungs. The most common signs and symptoms of asthma include fits of coughing, difficulty in breathing, constricted feeling in chest, shortness of breath with rapid breathing and wheezing. These symptoms may appear suddenly at any time of the day but are more often noted during early morning and in winters.
Asthma symptoms are usually triggered by exposure to allergens (pollen, dust, animal fur) and irritants in the air. Extreme weather conditions and respiratory illnesses such as flu or common cold may aggravate this condition. In some cases, strong emotions and exercises which have an effect on the breathing pattern can also trigger an asthma attack. While mild episodes of asthma may last only for a few minutes, severe episodes can last for hours and may require hospitalisation.
Asthma is usually diagnosed by taking a detailed account of symptoms, including the pattern and duration of asthma attacks. Several respiratory tests are done in order to assess the functioning of lungs. Allergy testing may also be done to identify hypersensitivity triggers.
There are several homeopathic remedies, which can be helpful in alleviating asthma symptoms and improving the quality of life, without showing any risk or side effects. Remedies such as nux vomica, arsenicum album, carbo vegetabilis and natrum sulphuricum are effective in treating chronic asthma.
