Carstim Information

Carstim (Carmustine) is an alkylating agent used in the treatment of various cancers, including brain tumors, multiple myeloma, Hodgkin's disease, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It works by interfering with the DNA of cancer cells, thereby preventing their growth and replication. Carstim (Carmustine) is a critical drug in the oncologist’s arsenal for treating aggressive cancers like brain tumors and lymphomas. While effective, it requires careful monitoring due to its potential for serious side effects, particularly pulmonary and bone marrow toxicity.

Uses

  • Brain Tumors: Effective in treating glioblastoma, astrocytoma, and medulloblastoma.

  • Multiple Myeloma: Often used in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents.

  • Hodgkin’s Disease and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: Particularly in cases that are refractory or have relapsed after initial therapy.

Carmustine is a nitrosourea compound that works by alkylating DNA and RNA. This alkylation interferes with DNA replication and transcription, leading to the inhibition of tumor cell growth and ultimately causing cell death. Carmustine is lipophilic, enabling it to cross the blood-brain barrier, making it especially effective in treating brain tumors.

Onset of Action- Carmustine has a delayed onset of action, as it works by gradually inhibiting DNA and RNA synthesis in cancer cells. Therapeutic effects are typically seen after a few cycles of treatment.

Duration of Action- The duration of action can vary depending on the dosage and patient response, but its effects on DNA synthesis can persist for several weeks after administration.
