Breast augmentation surgery
The number of women opting for breast augmentation surgery is alarming. It is the most common type of cosmetic surgery performed in almost all parts of the world. India ranks among the top 10 countries in terms of the number of breast augmentation surgeries performed. There are a number of ways by which breast augmentation surgeries are done. In India, a breast augmentation surgery could cost you anything between Rs 1 to 1.5 lakhs. It may vary according to the type of implant and the city or clinic where the surgery is to be performed. The surgery generally requires 2-3 hours, and you can be back to your normal routine in about 4-6 weeks.
Breast Implant
Increasing the breast size is primarily done using breast implants. These implants are inserted into the breast by making surgical incisions in and around the breast area. There are a number of such implants available. Ever since the introduction of silicone breast implants in 1962, cosmetic surgery using breast implants has gained tremendous steam. Before the insertion of any breast implant, the surgeon has to make some surgical incisions. The sites for these incisions can be any one of the three: under your breast, under your arm or around your nipple. Let’s take a look at the different types of implants to understand them better.
- Silicone implants
Silicone implants have been through a long journey of advancement in terms of quality, from the first-generation implants to the fifth-generation implants that are widely used nowadays. Developed in the 1990s, the fifth-generation implants are completely leakproof and made of cohesive silicone gel filler. They are as soft as the chewable gummy bears for children and are hence often referred to as gummy bear implants. The third- and fourth-generation implants can also be used in some cases; they are made of elastomers and available in smooth or textured surfaces.
- Saline-filled implants
These are commonly used implants that contain sterile saline. Even if the saline leaks, the implant collapses and the water is expelled from the body. They have uniform firmness and a little bit of natural feel and shape. Saline implants require a surgically less invasive technique to place them.
- Structured saline implants
These are also made of sterile saline filling but have an inner structure that gives the implant a more natural feel.
- Double-lumen implants
These are silicone gel fillers inside a capsule having a sterile saline solution. These can be reverse lumen (silicone outside and saline inside) also. Capsular contracture is minimum with these implants.
- Textured implants
These were introduced to maintain a firm position in the breast.
- Anatomic and round implants
These are smooth and round implants which can move in their surgical pockets.
Fat Transfer Surgery
In this type of surgery, fat from the thighs or abdomen, wherever in excess, is removed, refined and injected into your breasts to increase the size.
Mechanical Breast Enlargement:
These include increasing the size of the breast by stretching the soft tissue and muscles of the chest. Tissue expanders are used to stretch the breast tissue and make more space for an implant. Generally, tissue expanders are used for mastectomy (breast removal) patients who go for breast reconstruction surgeries.
Risks or problems associated with implants
Pain and discomfort after a breast implant surgery are common side effects. Let’s have a look at the risks associated with such surgeries, so that you may be able to weigh your options wisely.
- The implant can rupture or leak, causing injury.
- There may be consistent breast pain after the surgery.
- Lumps can appear inside the breasts.
- There can be infections, haemorrhage or haematoma at the site of the incision.
- Complications such as thrombosis (formation of clots in the blood vessels) or capsular contracture can occur.
- Breast implants are not lifelong; they do come with an expiry date. After a span of 10 years, they need to be replaced.
- In the case of fat transfer surgery, there are chances of infection, necrosis (death) of fat cells and formation of cysts or lumps in the breast.
- Repeat surgeries are also required for fat transfer cases, as the fat is reabsorbed into the breast.
- There is a need for consulting a psychiatrist, as many cases of suicide have been reported after breast augmentation surgery.
