What is a DMSA scan?
A dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) scan is an imaging test performed to check the position and function of the kidneys.
The scan is performed by injecting a chemical called DMSA that is linked to a radioactive material. DMSA is a radioactive material that emits gamma radiations. These radiations are picked up by a special gamma camera and converted into images.
Normal kidney cells take up the DMSA and show up as bright spots on the images. On the other hand, damaged kidney cells take up less or none of the DMSA and are seen as less bright spots or may not be seen at all.
