What is Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Amino Acids test?
A CSF amino acids test checks the levels of amino acids in your Cerebrospinal fluid - a watery liquid present in the brain and the spinal cord.
Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. They play an important role in maintaining normal brain function and are necessary for the synthesis of hormones, and neurotransmitters (chemical messengers that transmit signals from one nerve cell to the other).
Impaired amino acid metabolism or transport causes amino acid disorders. This leads to fluctuations in the levels of amino acids in the body fluids, including the CSF. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, amino acid disorders can cause seizures, mental retardation and even brain damage.
