It's that time of the year when changing weather, smog and smoke from firecrackers make itchy throats a common occurrence. An itch in the throat can vary in intensity, from mildly irritating to painful. If it persists for a long time, it may cause pain and discomfort.
An itchy throat could also be a sign of an allergy or throat infection. Sometimes, an itchy throat is accompanied by other symptoms such as a persistent cough, cold, sneezing, blocked sinuses resulting in a feeling of heaviness in the face and head, itchiness in the eyes and the skin, fever, stomach pain, nausea, and dizziness.
The most common reason for an itchy throat is allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever. However, a person with specific dust allergies, food allergies, or allergies to fragrances may also experience an itchy throat along with other signs of allergy.
A bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus bacteria can also result in itchy throat. Other causes of an itchy throat include severe dehydration, acidity, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption (alcoholism).
