It's that time of the year when changing weather, smog and smoke from firecrackers make itchy throats a common occurrence. An itch in the throat can vary in intensity, from mildly irritating to painful. If it persists for a long time, it may cause pain and discomfort.

An itchy throat could also be a sign of an allergy or throat infection. Sometimes, an itchy throat is accompanied by other symptoms such as a persistent cough, cold, sneezing, blocked sinuses resulting in a feeling of heaviness in the face and head, itchiness in the eyes and the skin, fever, stomach pain, nausea, and dizziness

The most common reason for an itchy throat is allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever. However, a person with specific dust allergies, food allergies, or allergies to fragrances may also experience an itchy throat along with other signs of allergy.

A bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus bacteria can also result in itchy throat. Other causes of an itchy throat include severe dehydration, acidity, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption (alcoholism).

These are the things you need to keep in mind when you have an itchy throat:

  • If you have an itchy throat due to allergies to pollens or dust, do not forget to wear your mask while going out. Avoid going out during spring and fall as these seasons bring along pollen in the air.
  • Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol or caffeine as they tend to dry your throat thus exaggerating the itchiness in the throat.
  • Clean any damp area in your house and surroundings or else it may result in mould spores.
  • People allergic to dust must wash their bedsheets and other beddings weekly in hot water to avoid dust mites.
  • Quit smoking. If you can't give it up altogether, then at least stop smoking while you have an itchy throat.
  • Avoid spicy and oily food when you have an itchy throat.
  • People with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) must avoid fatty and oily food to prevent regurgitation of stomach acid, which can also cause an itch in the throat. GERD and acid reflux—especially when the stomach acid reaches the larynx and pharynx, or voice box and throat, (laryngopharyngeal reflux)—is among the top causes of dry cough worldwide. And dry cough, as we know, can increase the itchiness in the throat.
