The countrywide lockdown, enforced across India on March 25 for a 21-day period, has been a necessary step in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19, the highly contagious disease caused by the coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. Despite the efforts made by authorities during this time, the number of positive cases has increased, with over 5,800 patients testing positive for the presence of the virus in the body as of 9 April 2020.
The shutting down of educational institutions, government buildings, offices, places of worship as well as all other public spaces, airports as well as national and international borders have also been done to curb the spread of the disease.
The practice of physical distancing, wearing masks and face covers when outside, practising regular hand hygiene and remaining indoors for most of the day have been seen as positive steps towards flattening the curve of the global pandemic that has now infected over 1.5 million people and claimed over 89,000 lives, according to data collated by Johns Hopkins University and Medicine.
The shutting down of businesses, offices as well as educational institutions, however, has also brought with it unique challenges that people have been dealing with in view of the outbreak of this coronavirus infection. While most organisations working in non-essential services have moved to working remotely in this period, it has become increasingly difficult to practise one’s regular schedule, affecting the mental health and physical wellbeing of many.
