Collection of fluid in the tissues of the feet results in feet swelling, medically known as pedal oedema. This accumulation of fluid occurs due to different reasons, such as disorders related to the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys and thyroid gland or conditions such as varicose veins, inflammation (cellulitis, rheumatoid arthritis, filariasis, gout) and injuries (fracture, ligament sprain, and deposition of calcium). Feet swelling may also occur as a side effect of some medicines. Additionally, old age, standing long hours, pregnancy and allergy are other causes of swelling in feet.
Conventionally, swelling is managed by the administration of diuretics (medicines to remove excess water from the body as urine) and by treating the underlying cause of this condition.
Homeopathic remedies not only target disease symptoms but also the tendency of an individual to suffer from certain conditions, also known as miasms. Remedies such as arsenicum album, apis mellifica, calcarea carbonicum, apocynum, bryonia, lycopodium, rhus toxicodendron, sulphur and china are commonly used in the treatment of swelling in feet.
