As the number of cases of COVID-19 infection is growing in India, the requirement for personal protective equipment (PPE) is increasing. PPE is a basic necessity for doctors, nurses and other medical staff who are taking care of COVID-19 patients.

Due to the increased demand for PPE, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has asked hospital staff to use PPE kits rationally: keep most of it for those who are at a high risk of getting exposed to COVID-19 infection, such as the laboratory staff, the ambulance staff, ICU staff and the isolation ward staff.

The following things are present in a PPE kit:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • A water-resistant gown which covers the front and back of the body
  • Transparent goggles
  • An N-95 respirator (mask)
  • Triple-layered medical mask
  • Shoe covers
  • A face shield
  • A hood covering the head

Here in this article, we will talk about the different PPE which should be used for different areas of the hospital, to ensure that the PPE kits are used rationally during the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

  1. PPE for COVID-19 screening OPD staff
  2. PPE for sample collection staff
  3. PPE for sample handling staff
  4. PPE for COVID-19 ICU staff
  5. PPE for sanitation staff
  6. PPE for COVID-19 ward staff
  7. PPE for COVID-19 ambulance staff
  8. PPE for COVID mortuary staff
  9. PPE for the rest of the hospital staff
  10. Doctors for Personal protective equipment for different areas of the hospital

Health care workers at the COVID-19 screening OPD should wear the following PPE:

  • N95 mask: These masks block droplet transmission of infection and have good breathability to minimise discomfort when health workers wear them for several hours at a time.
  • Goggles: These goggles need to be well-fitted, with a proper seal with the skin of the face.
  • Gown (water-resistant): These gowns are impermeable to bodily fluids, including blood.
  • Gloves (two pairs): Nitrile gloves are resistant to some chemicals and also useful for those who have a latex allergy. If these are not available, powder-free latex gloves may also be used.

The administration staff does not require any PPE as they do not come in contact with infected or suspected patients.
