The COVID-19 pandemic may have taken more than six-and-a-half million lives worldwide, but the number of people who have recovered from the new coronavirus infection has gone past 10 million. 

The number of people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the world has gone beyond 16.6 million, making the total number of recovered cases more than 61%, while the rate of casualties has fallen to 3.94%.

India, however, continued its upward surge in terms of registering the highest number of deaths in a single day compared to any other country in the world due to the COVID-19 infection. For the past several days, the United States, Brazil and Mexico were ahead of all other countries in terms of daily deaths from COVID-19. But on Monday, India overtook all the three countries in a 24-hour period, registering 636 deaths along with 47,000 new cases.

More than 61,000 patients were confirmed over the same period in the US along with 596 deaths, while more than 23,000 new cases were reported in Brazil and 627 deaths were recorded in that time. There have also been reports of 306 confirmed deaths in Mexico, which was witnessing 600 to 700 deaths every day for several days.

  1. The worst health emergency in the history of WHO

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has described the COVID-19 pandemic as the worst health emergency in its history.

In his daily press conference on COVID-19 on Monday, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reiterated that the world can defeat this crisis only by taking strict steps such as wearing masks and not going out to crowded places. He said, “Wherever these rules have been followed, there have been fewer cases. Where this has not happened, cases have increased.” 

The WHO chief praised countries such as Canada, China, Germany and South Korea where governments have managed to control the viral infection.
