The number of tests being conducted to identify people infected with the new coronavirus infection in India has exceeded 20 million (two crore), making India the fourth country in the world with these many tests conducted to identify COVID-19 patients.
The Indian Institute of Medical Research (ICMR) updated on Monday morning that in the last 24 hours, more than 3.81 lakh COVID-19 tests were done across the country. Of these, about nine percent of that number have been found positive.
Statistics show that India lags behind only China, the United States and Russia in terms of testing. The US has been testing more than 180,000 tests per million of the population. In Russia, this figure is more than 1,98,000. At the same time, China has been able to do 62,000 tests per million of their enormous population. India’s figures per million of their population isn’t as high either, with about 14,627 tests being done. However, this figure may increase in the coming days, as India has increased its testing capacity rapidly in recent months.
However, statistics related to the testing being conducted in the states of India show that the highest number of tests have been done in the states of Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. More than 2,700,000 and 2,500,000 tests have been done in these two states respectively. More than 2.2 million tests have been done in Maharashtra and about 2 million in Andhra Pradesh. States like Rajasthan (1.57 million), Karnataka (1.42 million) and Delhi (1.06 million) have the next highest figures, while West Bengal is also moving towards one million tests.
The figures for testing of many large states are, however, disappointing, such as Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. The number of tests of COVID-19 has now crossed eight lakh in Gujarat, which has a population of more than six crore. The population of Madhya Pradesh is more than eight crore and the number of tests there are under 800,000. Bihar, with a population of about 12 crore, has conducted only six lakh tests.
However, testing has been increased in these states in recent times. Despite this, these states lag behind smaller states and union territories like Assam and Delhi. Assam, with a population of over 3.40 crore has conducted more than 9.64 lakh tests to identify COVID-19 infected patients, while Delhi with a population of about 20 million has conducted more than a million tests.
