The number of COVID-19 patients in India crossed 14 lakh, with around 50,000 new cases and 708 deaths reported on Sunday. The total tally was 14,35,453 infected nationwide and 32,771 dead from the new coronavirus infection at the beginning of this week.
Amid the gloom and doom, there was also some positive news, as the number of people who recovered from the disease crossed 9 lakh. Data from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare show that around 32,000 patients were declared COVID-free on Sunday, taking the number of recovered patients in India to 9,17,568 and the recovery rate to 64%. The death rate in India, too, came down—to 2.28%.
More than five lakh tests in one day
India saw a record number of tests on Sunday. According to data shared by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), more than five lakh COVID-19 tests were conducted across the country in the last 24 hours. ICMR data showed that the total number of tests conducted so far is over 1.68 crore (1,68,06,803). Of these, 8.54% have turned out positive.
Last weekend, India’s daily testing capacity had crossed four lakh—the country has now increased this by an additional one lakh tests per day. Apart from India, China, America, Russia, the United Kingdom and Brazil are the only nations that have conducted more than one crore tests each.
One lakh patients in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka
The number of states with one lakh patients in the country increased to five on Monday, with Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka joining the list.
On Sunday, Andhra Pradesh had reported 7,627 new COVID-19 patients and Karnataka had added 5,199 patients to its total tally of 96,141. Andhra Pradesh, with 96,298 active cases on Sunday, also became the eighth state in the country with more than 1,000 COVID-19 deaths: with 56 COVID-19 deaths reported on Sunday, the total COVID-19 death toll in Andhra Pradesh was 1,041 by Sunday. In Karnataka, the figure had gone up to 1,878, with 82 new deaths reported Sunday.
Dip in the active cases in Delhi
Talking about some of the states that are worst-affected by COVID-19, the number of cases in Maharashtra increased to more than 3.75 lakh. On Sunday, 267 COVID-19 deaths were reported from the west Indian state, taking the total death toll in Maharashtra to 13,656. If the public health crisis continues at the same pace, this figure could go beyond 14,000 this week.
In Tamil Nadu, 85 people died over the weekend, taking the death toll to around 3,500. With around 7,000 new patients, the number of people infected by COVID-19 virus SARS-CoV-2 in Tamil Nadu has crossed 2.13 lakh.
On the other hand, the situation in Delhi continued to improve. In the last 24 hours, 1,075 new patients tested positive and 21 people died. Both these figures are lower than Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. According to the Health Ministry, the number of COVID-19 patients in Delhi has exceeded 1.3 lakh, out of which 3,827 (2.93%) patients have died. However, 1,14,875 (about 88%) have also recovered.
In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, the number of patients is around 67,000 and the death toll has gone up to 1,426. On Sunday, 3,246 patients tested positive and 39 died.
West Bengal recorded 2,341 new cases of infection and 40 deaths on Sunday, to take the total number of patients to 58,718 and the death toll to 1,372.
In Gujarat, over 2,326 people have died due to COVID-19, while the total number of people infected has crossed 55,822. In Telangana, more than 54,000 people had contracted the virus by Sunday. Of these, 463 had died.

- To date, there have been 79 deaths in Assam, but the number of infected has crossed 32,000

- Death toll crossed 800 in Madhya Pradesh, 27,800 cases reported so far
